Fat people and their allies have a language, which like many subcultures, is unique to the group. There are words that describe different kinds of people. Acronyms abound in the fat world. I think the acronyms come from so much of fat culture revolving around the Internet. Like everything else online if you type something a lot you want a quick way to do it. Some important words and acronyms can be found below.
BBW = "Big Beautiful Woman." There is no clear definition of what makes a woman a BBW. Many people feel that if a woman considers herself to be a BBW then she is one. That seems to work as well as any other definition.
SSBBW = "Super Size BBW." SSBBW is even harder to define. Probably the best definition comes from clothing size. Women's sizes 24 to 30 and up are often considered "super size." Some people say a woman is an SSBBW if she is over 300 pounds, others say 400. The height of the woman can make a difference too. Others say, like BBW itself, it is how a person feels. SSBBW are generally included when speaking of BBW in the generic sense.
BHM = "Big Handsome Man." The male counterpart to BBW.
SSBHM = "Super Size BHM." The male counterpart to SSBBW. This one isn't heard as often because there is no comparable clothing designation as there is for women.
BBP = "Big Beautiful People." Non-gender specific BBW/BHM.
FA = "Fat Admirer" or "Fat Acceptor." A male who may or may not be fat that finds fat people attractive.
FFA = "Female Fat Admirer." or "Female Fat Acceptor." The female counterpart of an FA.
SA = "Size Acceptance." The movement or attitude that promotes or is in favor of equal rights for and fair treatment of fat people.
"Bear" = A BHM who is hairy (beard and more than a little body hair). Usually used with specific reference to gay men.
"Chubby Chaser" = A gay man that is an FA.
"Phat" = A variation in the spelling of "fat." I just sorta like it. Also equivalent to "cool." I've been told many other meanings as well. One of the more common being "Pretty Hips And Thighs." I've been known to sign emails, especially to friends at work, with "Phat Tony."
