Modern Chivalry

I'm personally of the opinion that if one behaves in a civilized, reasonably well mannered way towards people of both genders it will be transparent as to whether or not one is what would be traditionally called a "lady" or a "gentleman."  To me it makes women different and unequal to put them on a "pedestal."  It reinforces traditional power differentials.  Men become protectors of "defenseless" women.  It plays up the traditional "Madonna or whore" stereotypes where it is OK to treat a "whore" like dirt.  It ultimately puts women into a box that constricts and confines their potential.

To be sure, there are "some militant man hating feminists" out there.  But, in my opinion, to blame the entire movement for equal rights and treatment for women on a few extremists is to demean and degrade the efforts of many women (and more than a few men) to improve the quality of their lives.  That "pedestal" that women had and, to some surprisingly large extent, still have to carry around makes it really hard to work in high paying jobs where "the little lady" might get dirty or have to play hardball in negotiations.  And, of course, if she sullies herself with work she must be a "whore" and therefore open to abuse and discrimination.  After all, she might fall off of her pedestal and be shown as a human being with all the flaws inherent therein.

It's true that women have come a long way.  And, some of my characterizations above may seem harsh, but, it wasn't long ago that some men would openly express the attitudes I mention above.  And some still do.  I believe that the sooner we all start treating each other with respect regardless of gender the sooner we will all be safer and happier.
